A week-long archaeological investigation came to an end at the recently discovered medieval cemetery in Rideļi, located in Engure Parish, Tukums Municipality. The archaeological research was led by archaeologists from the Faculty of Humanities (FH) at the University of Latvia (UL) – Anna Batraga, Rūdolfs Brūzis, Andris Šnē and Armands Vijups.

The archaeological investigations and educational activities brought together students from the Bachelor’s programme “History and Archaeology", the professional development programme “Archaeology and Methods,” and members of the Engure Parish community. The local community was actively involved in the fieldwork and took part in a series of educational lectures on the Curonians of Northern Courland and the study of ancient burials.

Evidence of a possible late medieval and early modern burial ground at this site had been gathered over the past couple of years; however, it is only now that archaeological research has confirmed the fact that a small medieval burial ground existed here.

According to research, the medieval burial ground at Rideļi is currently the furthest known ancient Couronian site in Northern Courland's eastern region.

The archaeological investigation of the medieval cemetery at Rideļi was supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia, the Engure Parish Council and the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Latvia.

A more detailed review and photo report is available in the Latvian version.
