On Wednesday, May 20, the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Latvia welcomed Korean calligraphy artist Han Chang-hwan, thanks to the cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Latvia.

Han Chang-hwan is a distinguished Korean calligrapher, advocate for the preservation of the Korean alphabet Hangul, and brush-writing performance artist with more than 30 years of experience. He has dedicated his professional career to promoting the beauty, philosophy, and cultural significance of Hangul by combining traditional calligraphy with impressive large-scale performances. Through his artworks, the artist introduces global audiences to the emotional depth and visual aesthetics of Hangul while conveying the values of peace, harmony, and Korean cultural heritage.

During the event, the calligrapher introduced students of the Department of Asian Studies and other attendees to the philosophical foundations of Hangul. Participants had the opportunity to observe the artist at work as he created calligraphy pieces featuring attendees’ names and various phrases on site. At the conclusion of the event, he also produced a large-format calligraphy artwork, which was presented as a gift and entrusted to the Department of Asian Studies for preservation.

Reflecting on the event, Sofija Mihailova, a first-year student in the Asian Studies programme, said: “It was a truly unique experience that provided insight into the art of Korean calligraphy. I hope there will be more similar events jointly organized by the University and the Embassy of Korea in the future.”

The event was opened by Kim Jonghan, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Latvia, and Jānis Priede, Acting Head of the Department of Asian Studies. The audience was introduced to the calligrapher’s biography by Ildze Šķestere, lecturer at the Department of Asian Studies, who also hosted the event. Consecutive interpretation from Korean to Latvian was provided by Anastasija Mackus, teacher at the Department of Asian Studies. The event was coordinated by Professor Kim Huntae, visiting professor at the Department of Asian Studies.

Thank you to all participants for your interest and attendance. We look forward to seeing you at future events!
