The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Latvia invites interested participants to take part in a Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Data Workshop, which will take place on March 27 at Kalpaka bulvāris 4, Riga, from 11:00 to 14:00.

During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to engage in a citizen science activity, helping to document and improve descriptions of Ukrainian ethnographic artefacts in a digital collection. Participants will explore digital cultural heritage materials and, through a game-like activity, review keywords that help make these artefacts easier to find and access online.

The activity takes place within the AISTER project and is part of a small-scale pilot project in the digital humanities. The project explores how artificial intelligence (AI) tools and human participation can improve the descriptions of cultural heritage collections online, making them more accessible and discoverable.

The workshop is connected to a co-creation campaign on the Europeana CrowdHeritage platform, where participants are invited to explore the ethnographic collection of the Ukrainian traditional art online museum “Krovets.” The collection includes more than 300 folk artworks depicting scenes of everyday rural life and religious motifs.

By reviewing automatically generated keywords created using computational methods, participants will help to:

  • correct inaccurate terms,
  • reject irrelevant keywords,
  • add new and more precise descriptions by identifying objects, scenes, and characters visible in the images.

The goal of the campaign is to improve the accessibility and discoverability of Ukrainian ethnographic cultural heritage, while also raising awareness about the importance of human involvement in AI-assisted cultural heritage data description.

The activity will be conducted in English, and no prior knowledge is required. Participants should bring their own laptop.
