University of Latvia, Faculty of Humanities, Department of Classical Philology, Centre for Hellenic Studies and Latin Culture Heritage Centre would like to invite you to participate in the 7th International Classical Philology Conference ANTIQUITAS VIVA 2023: ENCOUNTERS ACROSS LANGUAGES, TEXTS, CULTURES (April 27 –28, 2023, Riga, Latvia).

The ANTIQUITAS VIVA conferences organized by the classical philologists of the University of Latvia traditionally focus on multifaceted aspects of the study of classical antiquity in continuity: classical languages and texts, ancient cultural heritage carry timeless, both obvious and harder to see cultural codes which are inherited and adapted according to the value system of the relevant era. These are continuous, purposeful, and deliberate, and perhaps quite random, unexpected, and even surprising encounters across languages, texts, and cultures. Researchers from various fields (philology, history, philosophy, theology, etc.), evaluating the causal relationships of both direct and indirect contacts between languages, texts and cultures in the context of ancient cultural heritage, are invited to offer their perspectives on these diverse encounter scenarios.

The conference pays special attention not only to encounters as such, but also to the people who, due to their activities, contributed to these encounters. In 2023, the 135th anniversary of Augusts Ģiezens (1888-1964), a prominent Latvian scholar of classical languages, teacher, linguist and translator of ancient texts, will be commemorated. In 2023, the ANTIQUITAS VIVA conference will be part of a wide range of events that will be organized by classical philologists of the University of Latvia to honour A. Ģiezens and his contribution. Thus, the participants of the conference are welcome to consider also the role of personality in respect to the cognition of various aspects of ancient culture and consequently also of encounter occurrences (for example, approaches to teaching, learning and researching classical languages, the role of translator and translation(s) in getting to know and interpreting ancient culture, etc.).

You are welcome to submit a filled-in application form and a summary of your presentation (APPLICATION FORM) to Ilona Gorņeva (e-mail:  ilona.gorneva@lu.lv), a member of the organizing committee of the conference, until December 20, 2022.

The notification of acceptance will be sent until January 10, 2023.

Languages of the conference: English and Latvian.

Proposed duration of a presentation is 20 minutes, time for discussion will be allotted afterwards.
