Traditionally, in the second half of March, classical philologists of the University of Latvia participate in the public readings initiated by the European Latin and Greek Language Festival (Festival Européen Latin Grec). This year, the organizers of the festival invited everyone to focus on the Roman poet Virgil and his remarkable epic Aeneid.

On March 23, 2023, the Riga readings of Virgil's Aeneid took place, as well as the opening of the exhibition dedicated to Virgil's epic poem. Activities related to the festival in Riga were organized by the Department of Classical Philology of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Latvia and the Latin Culture Heritage Center in cooperation with the Library of the University. Also the pupils of Riga gymnasiums (Riga Grammar School of Nordic Languages, Riga State Gymnasium Nr.2, Riga State German Grammar School) took part in the readings of Virgil's Aeneid.

The readings of 2023 are especially important for the reason that this year the linguist and translator Augusts Giezens is honored on his 135th anniversary. Augusts Giezens is the translator of Virgil's Aeneid into Latvian.
