Apple trees in the faculty courtyard

Dear colleagues and students, Welcome to the start of the 2020-21 academic year!

I am very pleased to share with you that we are starting this academic year strong in student enrolment numbers and international student applications.

As we are embarking on the autumn semester, keeping appropriate social distancing, avoiding large gatherings, staying at home when ill and adhering to general health guidance to protect ourselves and others have become shared norms.

As a response to the pandemic, we have adjusted to this atypical situation in order to keep each other safe. This year, we offer 'hybrid education' – a blend of online course delivery with face-to-face teaching, the latter taking place in the faculty classrooms the occupancy of which complies with the government and the University of Latvia Covid guidelines.

I wish I could tell you that the situation with Covid in the world and Latvia will become better soon, and the study process will run without a hitch - I am afraid, I cannot. Therefore, I kindly ask for your understanding if any technical issues occur, especially in the first weeks of September.

I am convinced that the students’ thirst for knowledge and new skills and the commitment of the academic, administrative and support staff will help us achieve the set academic goals and learning outcomes and make the studies academically challenging and intellectually rewarding.

Looking back at this singular experience after the pandemic, we will be incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together.

Wishing you a successful semester, strength and good health,

Indra Karapetjana, professor
Dean of the Faculty of Humanities
